1/11/06 - Back from holiday, and I've posted my extended essay on Realism in Animation that originally appeared (in slightly different form) in the 2004 Animation Journal. I've also added a brief link to commemorate the coining of the term "dorkofascist."
28/8/06 - One of my bigger design upgrades. It's still not 100% there: I want to integrate Odds & Ends - the new name for the R&R pages - fully into the site, but after struggling with Blogger's template software, have given up on that for the moment.
21/8/06 - My contribution to a blog-a-thon saluting Friz Freleng.

29/3/06 - Added an essay about Pauline Kael.
18/3/06 - Silliness: Get This to the Boys in Marketing.
12/3/06 - After a few days of tinkering with the site's design, I've finally added a brief recap of the Oscars.

4/3/06 - Revamped the In Depth and Rantings and Ravings pages.
19/2/06 - Added Brokeback Mountain.
16/2/06 - Linked to the excellent Brokeback to the Future parody trailer.
10/2/06 - Housekeeping: provided a much-needed revamp of the links and updated my bio.
8/2/06 - Added a review of Munich, a link to my essay on Steven Spielberg at Senses of Cinema, and some comments on Good Night and Good Luck and political filmmaking.
2/2/06 - Added some information about the publication of Will Brooker's book The Blade Runner Experience (to which I contributed) to the front page. Click here for more information.
23/1/06 - Another Brokeback Mountain editorial. After this I leave the conservatives to it. Also, some brief ruminations: thoughts on the death of Norm McCabe, and the possible sale of Pixar to Disney.
21/1/06 - Added some thoughts on Fred Nile's attack on Brokeback Mountain.
15/1/06 - Added some commentary on the collaboration between Andy Serkis and Weta Digital on King Kong.
8/1/06 - I've had a Christmas break from the page, but not from writing: check back (or use the RSS feed to subscribe) for links to a major piece of work in the next few weeks. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy some belated thoughts on both the 1933 and 2006 versions of King Kong. There should be further Kong related commentary here around the middle of the week.
13/12/05 - Added The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
5/12/05 - Thoughts on the ABC's My Favourite Film list.
4/12/05 - Added Independent Cinema - The New V ! @ G R @, a look at the influence of digital technology on independent cinema.
10/11/05 - Some thoughts on preview footage from King Kong.
2/11/05 - Added a review of Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation.
24/10/05 - Added a review of Wait Means Never (Winner of Best Picture at the 2005 Melbourne Underground Film Festival) and some thoughts on Daniel Craig's casting as James Bond.
23/10/05 - The things you notice when cartoons turn up on DVD.
17/10/05 - Much to my surprise, I find myself writing about the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels.
11/10/05 - Added an appreciation of Bob Clampett.
1/10/05 - Added some comments on failed Roald Dahl collaborations, and the film remake of Gilligan's Island.
19/9/05 - Added my special feature on Mondovino (courtesy of Luke Buckmaster's In Film Australia, where it first appeared), consisting of a review and an in-depth interview with director Jonathan Nossiter.

8/9/05 - Added a double review covering both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Willy Wonka & the Choccolate Factory.
29/8/05 - Added The General.
15/8/05 - Added Kung Fu Hustle and some comments on good and bad trailers.
13/8/05 - Added a review of Tom Shone's book Blockbuster, and in the process considerably revamped the whole book review section. I have also updated the post about the Looney Tunes DVDs to note that Wave 2 has now been announced. I'd like to take credit for this, but fear that might be overestimating my clout.
7/8/05 - Added some thoughts on Wartime Filmmaking, and a run-down of some of the great cartoons not yet released by Warner Bros Australia.
3/8/05 - Added The Graduate.
30/705 - Added some comments on the latest happenings at Disney.
28/7/05 - Sorry for the lack of updates, which has been caused by a trip away, a computer problem which lost some updates last week, and incessant page tinkering. I have revamped the front page, making the last update the shortest lived major design change in the site's history. My main concern with the new design is that those viewing on lower resolutions may get ugly formatting: please let me know if you have any trouble. After much soul-searching, I am also trialling Google ads on the front page: as much as I like being ad-free, it would be nice to get some income, however modest, from this whole business. I may yet take them down: I'll see how they go.
9/7/05 - Added some thoughts on Indiana Jones IV. You might notice the front page has been revamped slightly, mainly to get a little more prominence to some otherwise obscure content. I have also ironed out most of the problems with the Rumours and Ruminations page that the recent changes at blogspot caused. Please let me know if there are any display peculiarities either here or over at the R&R pages that I should be aware of.
1/7/05 - Added War of the Worlds.
19/6/05 - Are movies getting better or worse? I ponder this question here, and also take a look at some world cinema from the seventies.
12/6/05 - Added some discussion of the All-Time Top 100 movies, as well as the difficulties of listing movie-making "worsts."
7/6/05 - Just a note that a version of my Star Wars essay referred to directly below was in today's Age.
29/5/05 - Added Nobody Knows, and Only a Conservative Deals in Absolutes, an essay on the politics of Star Wars. I also archived one of the better Rumours and Ruminations posts, Stallonezegger, to the In Depth Page. I will be doing this with the better posts from now on, so that you don't have to hunt through the blog page too much for my better pieces.
19/5/05 - Added Revenge of the Sith. George Lucas has made an excellent Star Wars movie. Who knew such things were still possible?
15/5/05 - More on Joe Grant.
10/5/05 - Cinephobia now has an RSS feed, and I added the best review yet to my list of Revenge of the Sith reviews. You have to read this one.
8/5/05 - Comments upon the death of Joe Grant, and a disturbing new revelation.
6/5/05 - More Revenge of the Sith reviews.
28/4/05 - Kevin Smith has reviewed Revenge of the Sith and Warners are rethinking Loonatics.
22/4/05 - Added some thoughts on M.J. Simpson's already infamous review of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
17/4/05 - Added The Sea Inside.
6/4/05 - Thoughts on the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and an early short film of Jim Reardon's: Bring Me the Head of Charlie Brown.
5/4/05 - A bit of a design revamp for the site, with a more elegant treatment for links and a slicker look for the "white" (text-based) pages, such as the reviews.
30/3/05 - Added Bambi.
28/3/05 - Not sure if the world really needed a side-by-side comparison of the careers of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, but here it is anyway. Plus, a couple of days ago, I posted this silly link.
23/3/05 - Thoughts on movie lists and various forms of MASH.
18/3/05 - Comments on the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Revenge of the Sith trailers. Oh, and the War of the Worlds trailer also.
14/3/05 - Later than expected, but finally up: The Aviator.
3/3/05 - Thoughts on Scorsese, the Aviator, and the Best Director Oscar. My proper review of The Aviator should follow this weekend.
26/2/05 - More comments on Casino Royale, as well as a Lego model even I think is strange.
20/2/05 - Revamped my Top Ten, adding links from that page to my reviews, putting a few new movies in the runner-up list, and changing one movie in the ten itself.
19/2/05 - Despite my comment below, I couldn't lay off commenting on the attempt to "re-imagine" Bugs Bunny.
15/2/05 - Spruced up the front page. Gone is the old logo, which I never really liked (I'm not so vain that I really wanted a logo based on my eyes). I hope the new version should be a bit more cinema-specific while still echoing the old look. I've also added headlines for the Rumours and Ruminations page to the sidebar, underneath the contents. Despite the recent trend in my posts, I am not planning to turn the site into a defacto blog, with the Ruminations page supplanting the more traditional reviews: unless there's something particularly compelling to ruminate on, my next post should be a proper review. Having said that, I've added a few words on the second DVD of The Goodies to that page.
5/2/05 - Added thoughts on the announcement of Casino Royale as the next Bond film to the new-look Rumours and Ruminations page.
29/1/05 - I've been fiddling around with the Rumours and Ruminations page, and have tried hosting it as a blog. I'm not into blogging - I'd rather focus on a structured, in-depth site like this, and don't want to become a slave to daily posts (as much as I'd love to post more often). But the architecture of the blog seems to fit that corner of my site, so I'm giving it a go. I've updated it with posts on The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and the announcement of the title crawl for The Revenge of the Sith.
17/1/05 - Added Sideways.
3/1/05 - The Incredibles is finally out in Australia. Rejoice, then go see it.
7/12/04 - Added a retrospective of 12 Angry Men, and
comments on The Polar Express
and The Incredibles to Rumours and Ruminations.
4/11/04 - Updated Movies They've Messed With to cover the new Star Wars DVDs, made small changes to the RAQ, and added a cry from the heart to the front page about the US election. No, this is is not a political site, but this is too much.
24/10/04 - Regular visitors to the page will note that there hasn't been any new content since August. Unfortunately, I've been working on other things, which has prevented me giving the page the attention I would like. It has also been a particularly non-compelling few months at the Australian box-office. However, I do note that Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate is getting a revival at Melbourne's Astor cinema, so I thought I might pull my old review up and on to the front page. Cheating, I know. I've also added new links that you might want to check out - links that update regularly.
11/8/04 - Added Fahrenheit 9/11 and did a little housekeeping.
10/7/04 - Added Shrek 2.
19/6/04
- Added The Day
After
Tomorrow and culled a lot of the older, crappier reviews.
5/6/04 - Updated Movies
They've Messed
With to include some details of the upcoming DVD release of THX 1138. Also added the Super Star
Destroyer to my Affordable
Star Destroyers, along with new photos of my original model.
24/5/04 - Added Kill Bill:
Volume 2, and added
commetary on Mike Moore's Palme D'Or
and Quentin Tarantino's proposed Casino
Royale to Rumours and Ruminations.
16/5/04 - Added The
Godfather,
and updated the Jaws
page to include details of books on the film and a couple of new
quotes.
25/4/04 - Added Starsky & Hutch.
18/4/04 - After several weeks working
on other things and bedding in
a new computer, I''m back with a review of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
6/3/04 - Revamped
and expanded the Links and updated Movies They've Messed With.
14/1/04 - Fresh back from a trip to Tasmania, I can add my review of The Return of the King.
21/12/03 - In my last update for a few
weeks (what with Christmas
and
such things) I've added Master and
Commander: The Far Side of the World and Spellbound,
along with some Rumours
and Ruminations.
30/11/03 - Added a review of Star Trek: Nemesis.
26/11/03 - Added the Rumours and Ruminations
page, an ongoing commentary on film news and rumours.
10/11/03 - Added a review of The Matrix
Revolutions. I have
also greatly expanded the review of one of my favourite movies, E.T. The
Extra-Terrestrial.
4/11/03 - Continued my Tarantino
retrospective with a review of Pulp Fiction.
2/11/03 - Added The Jaws Log
to
the book reviews.
20/10/03 - Added The
Rage In Placid Lake.
I have also comprehensively redesigned the front page, in probably the
biggest update in its appearance since the site launched. Gone is the
google-like austerity, in favour of something designed to put the
site's content on show a little more. Hopefully this hasn't occurred at
the expense of ease of navigation.
18/10/03 - Added a review of Kill Bill:
obviously I didn't get the other Tarantino reviews out first. I still
hope they'll follow soon.
12/10/3 - I had this theory that before
Kill Bill was
released I'd
go back and take a look at all of Tarantino's earlier films - I've just
realised
Kill Bill comes out Thursday, so I don't know if I'll make it.
But
here's a look back at Reservoir Dogs.
4/10/03 - New book review, of Jim Smith
& Steven Lavington's Bond Films.
.
19/9/03 - Added a new section: Book Reviews,
with initial reviews including Final
Cut by Steven Bach, Guide For the Film Fanatic
by Danny Peary, George Lucas
by John Baxter, and Hollywood
Cartoons by Michael Barrier. I also updated the Links.
2/9/03 - Finding Nemo has finally opened in Australia. I have also made minor revisions to the Links and Movies They've Messed With pages.
4/8/03 - Had a look back at Who Framed Roger Rabbit, prompted by the DVD release of the film.
28/7/03 - Added a review of Bad Eggs.
30/6/03 - Added a review of Treasure Planet, and minor updates to the Movies They've Messed With and Links pages.
21/6/03 - Added the Movies They've Messed With page (it lives under Rantings and / or Ravings) to list movies released in altered versions on Region 4 DVD.
8/6/03 - I'm a completist so I just had to add a review of The Matrix to go with my review of Reloaded. The Top Ten has also been revised.
3/6/03 - Added Two Murders in Dallas: Documentary, Reality, and Dubious Truth to the Essays Page.
21/5/03 - Added my profoundly puzzled review of The Matrix Reloaded.
16/2/2003 - Updated my bio and other
sections with biographical
detail, added my defence of the much maligned Signs,
and a new essay: The Enigma of Rosebud (about
the critical and theoretical approaches to Citizen Kane). Also
updated the links a bit.
26/5/2002 - Broke a long drought by
adding Attack
of the Clones. Also updated my bio.
26/7/2000 - Another very long gap between updates. But this time I have some reasonable material to show for the absence: I did write some stuff in there. New reviews include two of the best films of 1999: American Beauty and Being John Malkovich. Plus there's reviews of Back to the Future I, II, and III, and Deep Blue Sea. There are also brief comments on Deep Blue Sea, Lake Placid, and Dogma on the Jaws Page. More coming very soon - including big developments on the Jaws Page and DVD reviews.
7/12/99 - I seem to be in a horror mood lately, against my usual preferences. New reviews: The Blair Witch Project and The Sixth Sense, plus the slightly less gripping The World is Not Enough. Usual design improvements.
24/11/99 - Okay, so clearly I've gotta stop saying I'm going to be updating this page more often, because I keep not doing so. But here I am again. For now, just some ruminations on Norman Bates: reviews of Psycho (Both the Hitchcock original and Gus van Sant's remake) and Psycho II. Plus one or two tweaks in the ongoing rationalisiation of the design of the page, and the addition of the mailing list.
28/8/99 - Added Heaven's Gate and Star Trek: Insurrection. Only Star Trek V stands between me and complete coverage of the series. Damn you right to hell, Shatner!
3/8/99 - Finally marked up and added The Least Scary Option: Blade Runner and the Future City to the Essays Page.
16/7/99 - What's a few months between friends? Thanks for the supportive emails requesting a return to writing reviews (both of them); thanks, too, to the lovely girl who said she wanted to plagiarise one of my essays for uni but "just wanted to check the mark it got to find out if it was worth it." (Hint: if you don't even know whether or not it's a good essay, there's a reasonable chance your tutor might notice you didn't write it). It's good to feel needed... But finally I've got some new reviews. The big one I know my dedicated readers have been hanging out for is my review of The Phantom Menace. I also decided that if I wanted to make it big on the web I had to steal Harry Knowles' hardcore geek following. So I've added some Star Trek material on the page: reviews of Star Trek II, Star Trek III, Star Trek IV, Star Trek VI, and Star Trek: Generations. This means I now have reviews of all the Trek films except Insurrection (which hopefully will follow soon) and Star Trek V (but then, if you can't say something nice about something, don't say anything at all, right?) I've also done a bit of a freshen of the look and design of the page, neatening things up and providing what I hope is a better way of navigating around the page. The downside is that as part of this I have removed the "Complete Reviews" page. Sorry. It might have made off-line browsing easier but it was a pain to maintain and had fallen into disrepair anyway.
6/3/99 - Yes, I am still alive. Can't believe it's been five months. What can I say? Full time work makes for a little less free time than the uni lifestyle that prevailed when I originated this page. But I've been thinking I really should get back into it. As of today there are a few minor graphical tweaks and not much else... but I've got a whole pile of half-written reviews that shall follow soon. Really they will.
2/10/98 - Well, it's been a busy month for me, what with the end of my course being so close. So I missed my chance to beat the Australian opening of The Truman Show, just like I did with Armageddon; it's up now though. Also added Starship Troopers. Hope to add a new essay in a few days.
1/9/98 - Okay, I'm going commercial and putting Leo stuff on the page: reviews of Titanic and The Quick and the Dead.
22/8/98 - Missed the chance to beat the Australian opening, but it's here: Armageddon. Read the review and skip the film.
16/8/98 - Added There's Something About Mary and two pretentious essays: Autumn Moon and Urban Bewilderment and Chung King Express, Happy Together, and Postmodern Space. But hey - why aren't you people signing my guestbook?
6/8/98 - Added The X Files: Fight the Future, Deep Impact, Mr Nice Guy, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Goldfinger.
4/8/98 - Okay folks, I'm back. Had a great time in America, even if I was stuck in Orange County (tip for anyone else going on exchange there: get a car!). Hello - and thanks - to all my friends there who helped make L.A. so much more tolerable than it otherwise would have been ...But back to the issues at hand: I've given in to my desire to know who is actually registering these hits on my page and put in a guestbook (which you'll find in the somewhat rationalised feedback section). I've also added the Rarely Asked Questions section to provide an explanation of my rationale in writing this page. Not too impressive as my first additions upon my return, I know, but hey - deal with it. New reviews (and I have a six month backlog) will start to appear in the next few days. I'd hate to miss out on letting the world know how much Armaggedon sucked.
3/1/98 - Sorry, nothing new lately. I've left the country and will return around July 1998.
8/11/97 - Added Contact, Chasing Amy, Clerks, Forrest Gump, Rumble in the Bronx, and Speed.
18/10/97 - Added Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Missing to the essays, and Breakdown and Eraser to the reviews.
5/10/97 - Added two of the big concept movies of the 1980s: Tron and The Dark Crystal.
9/9/97 - Added Face/Off, Mrs Doubtfire, The Branagh Hamlet, the Zeffirelli Hamlet, and the Olivier Hamlet.
23/8/97 - Added Top Ten films and my Civ 2 Scenario.
10/8/96 - Added The Wild Bunch, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, and City Hall. See if you can pick the odd one out.
28/7/97 - Finally added The Castle.
25/7/97 - Added two Jerry Bruckheimer productions: Con-Air and Crimson Tide.
15/7/97 - Added links page.
13/7/97 - Added Bean plus a swag of videos (I've been sick): Mister Canton and Lady Rose, Tremors 2, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Twister, and The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Also added "Identifying Heroes: The Godfather and Pulp Fiction" to the essays page.
10/7/97 - Um... due to monumental incompetence, my e-mail address has been incorrectly listed for the last month (surely some kind of record). This has now (hopefully) been fixed. If you tried to e-mail me in the last month and didn't get through, please try again.
4/7/97 - Added The Fifth Element, Volcano, and Police Story 3: Supercop.
1/7/97 - Exams are finished, so I've now completely fixed the Title Index: the site should be much easier to navigate now. The A to K and L to Z files have now been replaced by 26 letter-specific files, and the Index now links to these smaller files, not the big one. Some new reviews will follow in the next few days.
20/6/97 - Added Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion and To Die For. Improved Title Index (links now go to the film and not just the letter) and added Lost World review and counter to Jaws page.
14/6/97 - added The Lost World and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
5/6/97 - page put online.
For devotees of poor web design, here's a sample of the old designs for the front page of the site, showing my protracted climb out of ugly, stone-aged web design. (Can you believe it took me five years to quit using that marble background?) Clicking on any of the links to Cinephobia pages will take you back to the current page.
August 1999 - March 2000 - February 2003 - October 2003 - November 2004 - July 2005 - July 2005 (Version B) - September 2005 - April 2006 - October 2006
