Guide for the Film Fanatic(Danny Peary, 1986, Simon & Schuster)
A book sadly out of print but worth mentioning because it is probably the best single volume collection of mid-length reviews. Peary is an excellent writer and his reviews are concise, thorough and fair. The book closely represents Pauline Kael's 5001 Nights at the Movies but where Kael's reviews are not treated well by the short format (they seem arbitrary and catty), Peary quickly covers a wide variety of information about each film (not just the director) and gives authoritative, well supported assessments. His choice of films seems more balanced than Kael's too. I learnt a lot about reviewing from this book.
